Microsoft buys 1.6 per cent share in Facebook…
25 October 2007
For $US240 million. Which values Facebook at $15 billion.
From the NY Times:
“As part of the deal, Microsoft will sell the banner ads appearing on Facebook outside of the United States, splitting the revenue with it. Last year, Microsoft struck a deal with Facebook to run banner ads on the site in the United States through 2011.”

NZ Herald online transformation continues
25 October 2007
Further to my post about the NZ Herald embracing social media, the NZ Herald online now has a myNews section. This is localised content – readers choose their city, and can then see the main headlines for their region and the local weather forecast.
Readers can then go to their regional homepage. Having looked at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin there is a fair amount of local content, Oamaru however has two articles in the last two weeks…
A suspicious work colleague suggests that revenue generating from more targeted ads is behind the move. Whilst that is certainly plausible and an added benefit I am hoping it is also part of their evolution towards a more engaging (and relevant) user experience.

Trade Me partners with Plunket
11 October 2007
We recently noticed that when you add new listings on Trade Me you now have the option to round your success fee up to the nearest dollar, with all proceeds going to Plunket. It is the member’s choice to donate – and those that do are flagged as supporters on their listing.
Plunket is New Zealand’s largest provider of support for children under five years old. Plunket’s Annual Appeal week runs from the 13th – 21st of October; look out for collectors in your local area or donate online.
Congrats to Trade Me for supporting a good cause. Although donations are made by members rather than out of Trade Me’s coffers, Trade Me is using their huge member base to give visibility to Plunket and also providing a mechanism by which members can easily donate. A few cents at a time could potentially be a huge windfall if a large number of members tick the box.

Do it.
